DESCRIPTION:Dear member\, \n  \nWe’re writing to tell you that regrettably it’s been necessary to cancel the prestigious 19th October visit to the Dragon Hall and literary dinner. \n  \nThree members dropped out at short notice – making the cost for the remaining participants too high. Despite a further publicity push last week\, the lack of takers suggests an apparent but understandable reluctance to travel during these current post-pandemic times. \n  \nIt was a tough decision to make since we know how much those of you who had booked and paid wished to be present at the event – not just to talk about books and to celebrate the FCDOA’s literary skills but also to be with other members for the first time since the end of 2019. On this occasion it has not proved possible. Full refunds will be made. \n  \nWe hope that in 2022 there will be other opportunities to enjoy and promote – face to face – our love of books and writing. In assessing how well prepared the British system is for the challenges ahead\, Peter will comment on what he sees as the lost art of strategy and the tendency to over-estimate Britain’s weight in the world. He will wrap up by outlining some choices which will shape Britain’s future\, from defining a new balance in relations between the US\, Europe and China\, to standing up for our values and interests while landing much-needed trade deals.

DESCRIPTION:FCDOA is organising an online talk by\nDr Helen Fry\nwith the title\nSpymaster: the man who saved MI6\non 11 January at 11.00 on Zoom \nTickets are £10 each available to buy here or by cheque payable to the “FCDO Association” \n\nThe author Helen Fry\, who gave a superb talk last year on MI9\, will talk about Thomas Joseph Kendrick – one of the most senior spymasters of the British Secret Intelligence Service in the 20th century. \nFrom his headquarters in Vienna in the shadows of a clandestine world\, he tracked Communist agents across Europe in the 1920s and Nazi spies in the 1930s. \nDubbed ‘the elusive Englishman’\, his real identity eluded Hitler’s Secret Service (the Abwehr) until his betrayal by a double agent in the summer of 1938. Expelled for spying\, he returned to London and disappeared from the public eye. Behind the scenes in the Second World War he headed one of the most important intelligence operations\, helping to shorten the war and save thousands of lives. \n  \nABOUT HELEN FRY \nHistorian Dr Helen Fry has written numerous books on the Second World War with particular reference to the 10\,000 Germans who fought for Britain\, and also British intelligence\, espionage and WWII. Her latest book is called: Spymaster: The Man who Saved MI6. She has written over 25 books – including The Walls have Ears: The Greatest Intelligence Operation of WWII; The London Cage about a secret interrogation centre in WWII; and MI9: A history of the British Secret Service for escape and evasion in World War Two. Helen has appeared in numerous TV documentaries\, including David Jason’s Secret Service (Channel 4)\, Spying on Hitler’s Army (Channel 4) and Home Front Heroes (BBC1). She is deputy chair and a trustee of Trent Park Museum Trust; and an ambassador for the Museum of Military Intelligence opening in 2023\, and President of the Friends of the National Archives. \n \n  \n

He went on to become the chief political correspondent for BBC News 24\,  becoming a long standing BBC  Senior Correspondent and later spent three years as the BBC’s Paris correspondent. During the 2003 invasion of Iraq\, Sopel was the BBC’s correspondent in Kuwait City. He was formerly the BBC’s North America editor. Jon Sopel has been the BBC’s North America Editor since 2014. He has covered the 2016 and 2020 elections and Trump’s White House at first hand\, reporting for the BBC across TV\, radio and online. He also presents the highly successful Americast podcast with Emily Maitlis and Anthony Zurcher. As a member of the White House Press Corps\, he has accompanied both President Obama and President Trump on Air Force One and interviewed President Obama at the White House. He has travelled extensively across the US and recently rode a Harley Davidson down the West Coast (that wasn’t for work though). He lived in Washington and London. He is the author of If Only They Didn’t Speak English: Notes from Trump’s America and A Year at the Circus: Inside Trump’s White House and his most recent book UnPresidented – a diary of the 2020 campaign and it’s aftermath is highly topical.   Since leaving Washington at the end of 2021\, he has taken time off to write another book. \n

DESCRIPTION:The FCDOA Online talk by \nSir Sherard Cowper-Coles\nwith the title \nThe Fourth Anglo-Afghan War: A Preliminary Post Mortem\non Wednesday 2 March 2022\nfrom 11.00 am – 12.00 noon on ZOOM \n\nThe talk is under Chatham House Rule\n\nUnder the Chatham House Rule\, anyone who comes to a meeting is free to use information from the discussion\, but is not allowed to reveal who made any particular comment. \n\n\n Sherard Cowper-Coles served as HM Ambassador in Kabul from 2007 to 2009\, and then as the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan from 2009 to 2010\, during which he returned to Kabul for an unusual second tour as head of mission following Mark Sedwill’s decision to leave the Embassy to work for NATO in Afghanistan.  He will reflect on what he learnt and saw during those three and a half years working in and on Afghanistan\, at the height of Britain’s military\, diplomatic and development commitment.  Some of that is reflected in his books Cables from Kabul and Ever the Diplomat. \nSherard has been at HSBC for eight years\, working as Senior Adviser to the Group Chairman and Group Chief Executive\, and more recently heading the Group’s global government and public affairs functions.  He is also Chairman of HSBC Bank Oman SAOG. \nEarlier he spent over 30 years in the British Diplomatic Service\, which he joined straight from reading Classics at Oxford.  He served in Cairo\, Washington and Paris.  He was also Private Secretary to Antony Acland and Patrick Wright as PUSs and later Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary\, the late Robin Cook.  He was Head of the Foreign Office Hong Kong Department from 1994 up to the handover to China in 1997.  His final diplomatic jobs were as Ambassador to Israel (2001–2003)\, Ambassador to Saudi Arabia (2003–2007)\, Ambassador to Afghanistan (2007-2009)\, and the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (2009–2010). \nSherard is Chair of the China-Britain Business Council and of the Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Trust\, and President of the Jane Austen Society. He is the author of two books about his diplomatic experiences: Cables from Kabul and Ever the Diplomat.

DESCRIPTION:FCDOA is organising an online talk by\nJohn Ashton CBE\nwith the title\nClimate Diplomacy and Politics after Glasgow\non 15 March 2022 at 11.00\nCost is £5 per ticket available to buy here or by cheque made to ‘FCDO Association’ \n\n  \nJohn Ashton CBE \n  \nJohn is a speaker\, writer and activist\, mainly but not exclusively on climate-related matters. \nFrom 2006-12 John served as Special Representative for Climate Change for Margaret Beckett\, David Miliband and William Hague. His primary role was to help them and the FCO lay the foundations for a foreign policy-led approach to climate change. This sought to mobilise the FCO as a whole\, focusing not merely on downstream multilateral negotiations but on shaping the upstream political conditions within which all negotiations take place\, so as to raise the overall level of ambition in the global effort. \nHe was a cofounder and\, from 2004-6\, the first Chief Executive of the think tank E3G. From 1978-2002\, after a brief period as a research astronomer\, he was a career diplomat. He served in Beijing in the early 1980s and in Hong Kong in the runup to the handover of sovereignty. He speaks Chinese\, and China has been a recurrent theme in his career. \nIn recent years John has been active on various fronts\, including the efforts to prevent fracking for shale gas and the opening of new coal mines in the UK\, and in calling for a more robust response to the genocidal oppression in progress against the Uyghur and other Turkic minorities in western China.  He also spent four years as a full time carer for his late mother. \nJohn values his independence and accordingly chooses to speak and act from a position free from institutional and financial strings of all kinds\, real or perceived.

She was previously bureau chief for ARD in New York and Warsaw.  She has lived in and reported on British politics and culture for many years . \nAnnette’s recent article in the New Statesman explored the lies and half truths promoted by the current British Government and explored its impact on democratic\, open and accountable governance and institutions. Since then\, we have seen such half truths and the blurring of fact and fiction being  used in many other European and other countries to the detriment of the rule of law\, not least by Russia in the current war in Ukraine. One has only to look at Warsaw and Budapest to see where that can lead\, and Putin’s self justifying  lies. Annette will explore how these undermine the foundations of a free society\, citizens’ rights and broader human rights. \nAnnette Dittert’s Bio \nAnnette Dittert  is a film maker and writer. She has been the London Bureau Chief  of the German public broadcaster ARD  since 2019.  Annette Dittert studied political sciences\, philosophy and German studies at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg and the Free University of Berlin. She  worked as a senior correspondent for ARD\, German Public TV. Before that she was posted as bureau chief and first correspondent for ARD in Moscow\, Warsaw\, New York and finally\, in London from 2008 till 2015 as Chief Correspondent. She now lives in London and Hamburg.

Prior to joining RUSI in 2014\, he was an investment banker for 20 years at J.P. There is no charge for this event. \n\n As ambassador to Italy\, John Shepherd was struck by the lack of a properly-researched history of the Villa Wolkonsky\, the Embassy Residence. To rectify that in retirement he undertook new research in Rome\, London and Berlin. \n  \nThe Villa dates back to antiquity\, its gardens today dominated by the remains of an imperial Roman aqueduct. Its development in the 19th century into a country house owes much to a remarkable Russian princess\, Zenaïde Wolkonsky\, and her heirs. In the 20th century it became a lens through which to view much of Europe’s history: the Russian revolution\, the fascist era and two World Wars.

He writes a weekly column for the Financial Times. He is British but lives with his wife and three children in Paris. His books Soccer Against the Enemy (1994)\, Ajax\, The Dutch\, The War: Football in Europe During the Second World War (2003)\, and – as co-author with Stefan Szymanski – Soccernomics (2009) and The Happy Traitor (February 2021).

DESCRIPTION:Event:                         Visit to Royal Hospital\, Chelsea \nLocation:                    Royal Hospital Road\, London SW3 4SR \nDate:                           Tuesday 26 July at 10.00 \nPrice:                          £10 \nPlaces available:         20 \nA visit to the Royal Hospital Chelsea has been arranged for Tuesday 26 July at 10 am.  Although there are 60 acres of ground not all will be covered in the tour but there is a fair amount of walking and there are steps up both to the Chapel and Great Hall.  There will be a guide for every group of 10 and the tour lasts 2 hours which includes 30 minutes for the Museum and Gift Shop.  Some 300 army veterans live at the Royal Hospital today\, including those who have served in Korea\, the Falkland Islands\, Cyprus\, Northern Ireland and WWII.  Others may not have served in campaigns\, but all understand what it means to be a soldier and the potential sacrifice that it entails. \nThe story of today’s Royal Hospital Chelsea begins over 300 years ago during the reign of King Charles II\, whose vision for a home for veteran soldiers was brought to life by Sir Christopher Wren.  Until the 17th Century the state made no specific provision for old and injured soldiers.  Care for the poor and sick was provided by the religious foundations.  Most of this provision ended during the dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of King Henry VIII.  By 1692 work on the building was completed and the first Chelsea Pensioners were admitted in February and by the end of March the full complement of 476 were in residence. \nHow to get there:  the nearest Underground Station is Sloane Square on the District & Circle lines.  Bus 170 from Victoria stops close by the Royal Hospital.  Other buses stop in Lower Sloane Street and a 10 minute walk will get you along the Royal Hospital Road to the Royal Hospital.  Buses also stop in Sloane Square and the King’s Road. \nApplying by post:  10 places will be available.  Please complete the slip below and return it with your cheque made payable to the FCDO Association and include an SAE if you want to be notified by post. \nRefunds:  the cost (minus an administration fee) will normally be refunded on cancellation up to one month before the event or up to the point when we incur expenditure for reservations\, whichever is the earlier. \nClosing date:  Tuesday 28 June 2022

However\, the story of the first two hundred documented years of human endeavour in Antarctica can reveal much more and much that still resonates today and will continue to do so into the future. \n  \nCAMILLA NICHOL CHIEF EXECUTIVE \nCamilla has worked in the museums and heritage sector for 20 years. She read Geology at Edinburgh followed by Museum Studies at Leicester and went on to work with collections as diverse as geology\, zoology\, scientific and medical instruments\, anatomy and pathology\, the early oil industry and Scottish football. Previously Head of Collections for Leeds Museums and Galleries\, she led the science team at York Museums Trust as Keeper of Geology and whilst at the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University she was fortunate to curate the Antarctic rock collections including specimens collected from Elephant Island by the marooned men from Endurance and the first rocks collected from the Antarctic mainland and by Carsten Borchgrevink in 1895. Camilla holds an AMA from the Museums Association\, is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is a trustee of the Burton Constable Foundation and Chair of the Cromwell Museum Trust. \n

DESCRIPTION:The FCDO Association\nis organising an online talk by\nDr David Hendy\nwith the title \n‘The BBC as an international broadcaster: historical perspectives’\nBBC 100thAnniversary \non 11 October at 11.00-12.00 noon on ZOOM\n\nDrawing on research for his current book\, The BBC: A People’s History\, Professor Hendy will explore how the BBC’s international broadcasting activities have developed since 1932\, when its Empire Service was launched. His talk will discuss how the launch of the Arab Service six years later signposted a new and more complex relationship between broadcaster and government on the question of how British interests were best served. This was a relationship that was refined further (and frequently tested) through the activities of the European Service during wartime\, a key moment in building up the BBC’s reputation among overseas audiences for reporting ‘truth’. Professor Hendy will also discuss changing broadcasting strategies during the Cold War and the shift from Empire to Commonwealth between the 1940s and 1960s\, as well as touching on more recent debates about impartiality and the implications of the Corporation’s moves to merge domestic and international news coverage.  \nDavid Hendy is Professor of Media and Communication at the University of Sussex\, England. He wrote and presented the recent 30-part BBC radio series Noise: a Human History\, which remains available to download on ITunes. The accompanying book\, Noise: a Human History of Sound and Listening\, will be published in the US in October 2013 by Harper Collins. The sub-LOAC ‘grey zone’ of interference and contestation in trade\, finance\, propaganda\, and cultural narrative is increasingly recognised as the a battlespace in which nations are operating continuously. Traditional national security apparatus is not optimised for this domain; with systemic access\, acquisition\, analysis and assessment weaknesses. Can a comprehensive decision support structure be established ‘behind the wire’\, or is some form of partnership necessary? How should nation states ally and pool their sovereignty in these different domains for best effect? What does the securocrat of tomorrow look like? The Integrated Review faced challenges in asking these questions\, and they – and many more – still deserve comprehensive answers. \n  \nBio note \nDr Jason Shepherd is Senior Director for International Strategy at Thomson Reuters Special Services International (TRSSI). TRSSI specialise in network analysis of graphable data from public\, commercial\, and proprietary sources for corporate and governmental risk owners. He joined TR after 23 years in the UK’s National Security community\, culminating in playing a central role in the Integrated Review on Science and Technology. A graduate of Cambridge\, Edinburgh and the LSE\, he is a Fellow of the Centre for Science and Policy at Cambridge University and a Senior Associate Fellow at the Centre for Financial Crime and Security at the Royal United Services Institute.

DESCRIPTION:The FCDO Association\nis organising an Online talk by\nDr Roger Lipsey\non Dag Hammarskjöld and his Legacy \nwith the title \n”Even the most impossible task offers opportunities”  Dag Hammarskjöld’s diplomacy’ \non 14 December at 2.30 GMT on ZOOM\n(at 9.30 EST)\n\nAfter his mysterious death\, Dag Hammarskjöld was described by John F. Kennedy as the “greatest statesman of our century.” Second secretary-general of the United Nations (1953 – 61)\, he is the only person to have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously. \nA towering mid-twentieth-century figure\, Hammarskjöld speaks directly to our time. Arguably\, Hammarskjöld’s diplomatic skills preserved the U.N. as a beacon of hope through turbulent times. “He demonstrates how his spirituality and inner strength were translated into penetrating analyses of world problems and\, most importantly\, into principled action.” commented Jan Eliasson\, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations on the biography. \nThe founding documents of the American republic do not stand alone; they are intimately paired with the founding fathers who debated\, developed and set in motion the real-life implications of those documents. The same is true of the United Nations: its Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights are superb documents that needed to be set in motion\, explored\, tested\, amplified where necessary. That role was principally Dag Hammarskjöld’s. His values\, his diplomatic astuteness\, his refined intelligence\, his immense and sustained concern for peacekeeping and peace making are the permanent DNA of the United Nations. Roger’s presentation will remind us of Hammarskjöld’s voice and principles and the major conflicts in which he sought the hidden opportunities for what he once called “peace and reason” in international affairs. \nThis talk is part of our “Makers of the Twentieth Century Series”. \n  \nBio Note on Speaker \nDr Roger Lipsey is a biographer\, art historian\, editor\, and translator and the author of Hammarskjöld: A Life (2013) and of Politics and Conscience: Dag Hammarskjöld on the Art of Ethical Leadership (2020). The books have been described by Dr Rowan Williams\, Master of Magdalene College (Cambridge University)\, former Archbishop of Canterbury as “An admirably judicious and comprehensive—and long overdue—study of one of the most remarkable figures of the twentieth century\, whose presence remains both spiritually and politically significant for an age of violently confused international relations.” \nSince publication of the biography\, Roger has lectured in many parts of the world under the auspices of the United Nations educational service and other organizations. Roger maintains an author website at rogerlipsey.net where these and other books are discussed.
