SUMMARY:FCOA visit to National Space Centre (NSC) Leicester
DESCRIPTION:Date:    Thursday 16 August 2018 at 11:30 Prompt\n\nPlaces available – 20:  Allocated on a first-come-first-served basis for FCOA members\, spouses/ partners.\n\nNB\, as a first\, this visit also includes members who are looking after children in school holidays\, \n\nand who may wish to bring them.  (To get the most out of the day\, NSC advise children aged 7 and above).\n\nIf space allows nearer the day\, non-FCOA members may be eligible\, but please check with Tim Handley first.\n\n\nPrice per person:  £13 per head\, adults or children. (NSC are operating a flat-group rate)\n\nDescription:   With thanks to Liz Galvez for suggesting this visit\, this is a unique opportunity to see a leading\ninternational centre in space research and to see exhibits which have captured the world’s headlines. These\ninclude one of only 3 known Soyuz spacecraft\, and the restaurant is situated beneath the nozzles of the Blue Streak\nand Thor rockets.  Famous visitors include Buzz Aldrin\, the second man to walk on the moon.  The failed Beagle\nMars spacecraft was controlled from here.\n\nhttps://spacecentre.co.uk\n\nWe will be on the Jupiter Programme\, which includes Fast Track Entry; Space crew briefing; entry to the\nGalleries; Planetarium show and 3D SIM Ride.  We will be able to stay until the NSC closes at 17:00. After the\ninitial briefing\, members will be free to visit the exhibits at their own pace\, many of which encourage\n“hands-on.” These are self-explanatory\, but there are guides at hand in each of the Halls to advise further.\nIf members wish\, we can re-assemble for lunch (at individual expense) in the restaurant – see Blue Streak\nand Thor\, above.\n\nGetting to the National Space Centre\, Leicester\n\nBy train:  from London (St Pancras to Leicester)\, then either taxi to NSC\, or a No 54 bus\, every 10 minutes\,\nfrom the station\, dropping off near to the NSC. There is some travel involved between the nearest stations at Bedwyn\, Pewsey or Swindon\, to Avebury\, likewise from there to Marlborough College. \nBy taxi –  Taxis would be an option but check prices and availability beforehand. \nBy car – Avebury is at the junction of the A4361 and the B4003\, post code SN8 1RF. Parking will be possible at the Red Lion. Marlborough College is on the Bath Rd\, Marlborough SN8 1PA\, parking is available at the College. This visit is more suited to cars\, hence asking whether drivers would be able to offer a seat to others or whether non-drivers would need a seat\, for some or all of the journeys involved. Arrangements will then be made to put respective parties in touch with each other\, but this cannot be guaranteed at this stage. DESCRIPTION:FOREIGN & COMMONWEALTH OFFICE\, KING CHARLES STREET \n  \nYou are cordially invited to join us for the FCOA Annual Lecture\, to be delivered by Baroness Ashton\, former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and First Vice President of the European Commission.  Baroness Ashton will speak on the subject of Lessons in Foreign Policy. \n  \nAs Lancaster House is no longer available\, the lecture will now be held in the FCO Media Suite and followed by an opportunity to socialise and network over a glass of Christmas mulled wine and mince pies.  The FCO choir will sing a selection of carols at around 5 pm. \n  \nThe cost of this event is £12 per head. \n  \nBecause of the change of venue\, we have been obliged to postpone the Annual Reception. \n  \n
