DESCRIPTION:FCDOA is organising an online talk by journalist and author of \nThe Happy Traitor (a biography of the British-KGB double agent George Blake)\,\nSimon Kuper\nwith the title George Blake versus the UK\non 13 July 2021 from 11.00 am – 12.00 pm on Zoom\n\n\n\nGeorge Blake versus the UK. Blake\, an MI6 officer who turned KGB double agent\, died in Moscow on Boxing Day aged 98. He deceived the British intelligence services and the Prison Service\, and harmed the country’s relationship with the US. The damage he did to the British state continued far beyond his unmasking as a traitor in 1961\, and some 40 agents are thought to have lost their lives because of Blake’s treachery. Yet his feelings about Britain were surprisingly positive.  His biographer Simon Kuper\, author of The Happy Traitor\, provides an insight into the mind of one of the most notorious cold war traitors. \n\n\nSimon Kuper (born in Kampala\, Uganda in 1969) was educated at Oxford University and Harvard. He writes a weekly column for the Financial Times. He is British but lives with his wife and three children in Paris. His books Soccer Against the Enemy (1994)\, Ajax\, The Dutch\, The War: Football in Europe During the Second World War (2003)\, and – as co-author with Stefan Szymanski – Soccernomics (2009) and The Happy Traitor (February 2021). Tickets are £5.

DESCRIPTION:Due to the Coronavirus crisis\, Spencer house is temporarily closed and this visit has been postponed. We will reinstate it as soon as it’s possible\, and safe\, to do so.  ​ \nSpencer House \n  \nSituated in St James’s Place\, it was commissioned in 1756 by John the Ist Earl Spencer who required a large townhouse to cement his position and status. Its architectural design is Ancient Greek in style. The house was occupied by successive Earls and Countesses Spencer until1895 when it was let. \n  \nLord Rothschild has been the present tenant since 1986. His family company has completed an admired restoration\, returning the state rooms and the garden to their original appearance. Ownership of the building remains in the hands of the Spencer family. \n  \nTogether with nearby Lancaster House\, Dudley House\, Bridgewater House and Apsley House\, Spencer House is one of the last of the many aristocratic houses which once adorned central London. \n     \n  \nVisit to Spencer House will be organised on Monday 20 July. SUMMARY:NATIONAL ARMY MUSEUM & CHELSEA PHYSIC GARDEN OF ENGLAND MUSEUM

We are delighted that the excellent FCO Choir will open our event with some carols. DESCRIPTION:Sir Simon Fraser\, previously PUS in the FCO from 2010-15\, will give this year’s FCOA Annual Lecture on Wednesday 2 December at 12.00. The title is Rebuilding British Foreign Policy. \nBecause of current Covid restrictions\, it will not be possible for him to speak in KCS as we had previously planned. Instead he will do so via the video conferencing app Zoom. \nThere will be a charge of £5 to cover the administrative cost of the event. SUMMARY:THE GARRICK CLUB VISIT
DESCRIPTION:A visit to the Garrick Club has been arranged for Tuesday 26 November at 10 am.\nTea/coffee and biscuits will be served on arrival in the Morning Room. The Club was\nfounded in 1831 and moved to its present premises in 1864. It houses the largest\nand most significant collection of British theatrical works of art and has over 1000\npaintings\, drawings and pieces of sculpture on display. Artists represented in the\ncollection include Johan Zoffany\, Thomas Lawrence and John Everett Millais\, whilst\npaintings of every British actor of note\, from David Garrick to Michael Gambon\, hang\non the Club walls. Many of the major literary\, theatrical and artistic personalities of\nthe last two centuries have been members\, including Charles Dickens\, William\nMakepeace Thackeray\, Henry Irving\, W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. The tour will\nbe led by Sarah Hughes and she will take in all the main rooms of the Club and point\nout the highlights of the collection. Please note there is a dress code which is called\nformal smart casual! No jeans\, denim\, shorts\, trainers or gym shoes are permitted\nand men should wear a jacket and collared shirt\, ideally also a tie. \nGetting there: the Club is located on Garrick Street in Covent Garden. Given the age and historical importance of Canterbury\, there’s plenty to draw on\, with murders\, suicides\, skeletons being found walled up and any number of creaking staircases and ghostly alleys. The tour is based on 25 years’ experience of our “Ghosthunter” guide and we’ll hear some of the more general history about Canterbury as well. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions\, there is therefore flexibility as to how long it might take\, but we’ll aim for around 1.5 to 2 hours. \nAmong many other tales\, we may hear about\, if not see:- \n\nthe ghost of the former mayor as he harmlessly rides his bicycle around the city\na phantom girl dressed in grey clothing seen to enter a front door and disappear; a female skeleton was later discovered under the floorboards\, draped in grey cloth\nthe water pump that “ran red with blood”\nnaughty children who can be heard playing on the stairs at “Tiny Tim’s Tearooms”\n\nAfter the tour\, we can regain our courage in a nearby\, recommended pub. DESCRIPTION:A visit to the Apothecaries’ Hall for 24 people has been arranged for Wednesday 16\nOctober at 11 am. The tour will last 1½ hours. The Society of Apothecaries’\narchives chart the history of its development and its changing roles and activities as\na City Livery Company; a major centre for the manufacture and sale of drugs at the\nHall (1671-1922); the founder (in 1730) and manager (until 1899) of Chelsea Physic\nGarden\, and medical examining and licensing body (1815 to the present day). The\nWorshipful Society of Apothecaries lies at the heart of the early foundations of\nmodern-day medicine and remains an important\, active and innovative medical\ninstitution today. The Society plays a key role in the advancement of special areas\nof medicine and in the ongoing post-graduate education and qualification of\npractitioners. Steeped in history and tradition\, the Society was founded by Royal\nCharter in 1617 and is one of the few livery companies in the City of London to\nremain professionally based with over 85 per cent of its membership belonging to\nprofessions allied to medicine. Housed for over 800 years in the Tower of London\, the Mint moved to Wales in the 1970s. It now exports to around 60 countries. It has made coins and medals\, including the Military Cross and the George Cross\, (but not the VC) and the 2012 London Olympic medals\, and we will see some of the most rare historical items in the world. \nOur tour will take us to areas inaccessible to the general public; with plenty to keep children occupied. We will learn how coins are made\, and for a small charge\, make a coin. (The only place in Britain where this is possible). DESCRIPTION:The connoisseur tour of Turner’s House has been arranged for 3 July with the first tour at\n10.30 and the second at 11.30. We will be taken round by Catherine Parry-Wingfield who\nwas instrumental in setting up the Trust to open the Lodge to visitors. Sandycombe Lodge is\na Grade II* listed house. It was designed and built in 1813 by England’s great landscape\npainter\, J M W Turner\, as a country retreat and a home for his father William. Tours last\naround 45 minutes and there is much to see of art\, architecture and conservation. No\nstilettos may be worn. \nThe House Director suggests the second tour might like to have\ncoffee in “one of the lovely cafés on St Margaret’s High Street” beforehand. St Margaret’s\nHigh Street leads into Sandycoombe Road. For those who want to lunch in the area there is\na 20% discount on the food bill at the Crown pub if you mention you have visited Turner’s\nHouse. \nBuses R68 and 70 outside Richmond Station stop at Marble Hill Park as does the 33 bus from\nHammersmith via Sheen and Richmond.  Sandycoombe Road is on the other side of the road.  You can walk from Richmond (the walk is just over a mile)\, taking the tow path to Marble Hill\, then walking through Marble Hill Park to cross the road to\nSandycoombe Road. SUMMARY:Salters' Hall
DESCRIPTION:Since before the Romans methods of extracting salt had been discovered and the importance of salt\nwas well established. As well as dealing in salt\, Salters were experts in the dry salting of fish and\nmeat and also dealt with flax\, hemp\, logwood\, cochineal\, potashes and chemical preparations. The\nmodern day association of the Salters’ Company with chemistry and science can therefore be traced\nright back to its roots. The Salters’ Company was first licensed by Richard II in 1394 but\, probably\,\nlike the other Livery Companies\, was in existence before 1066. The church of All Hallows in Bread\nStreet served as the central meeting place for business and entertainment as well as for worship. In\n1454 the Company was bequeathed a plot of land and Salters’ Hall was constructed. In 1533 a fire\nbroke out but was successfully extinguished. The Hall was rebuilt after a second fire destroyed it in\n1539 and then yet again rebuilt only to be destroyed by fire in 1598. The original site was then\ndeemed to be too small and a new one was purchased in 1641. This Hall was burnt to the ground in\n1666 by the Great Fire but rebuilt in 1668. By 1810 it was decided that the Hall which had stood for\n142 years was no longer suitable and a new Hall was designed. The Foundation stone of the fifth\nbuilding was laid down and the new Hall completed in 1827. On 10 and 11 May 1941 the Salters’ Hall\nwas bombed by German aircraft and most of the Hall destroyed. The Salters’ Company were then\nwithout a Hall for 43 years until 1976. \nThe present home of the Salters’ Company is a seven-storey\, Grade II-Brutalist building\, refurbished\nin 2016. Our visit will include opportunities to see the Main Hall\, the Court Room\, Salt Lobby and the\nSalters’ Exhibition and Archives. The tour should last about an hour and end with tea and coffee. \nThe Hall is situated on London Wall Place\, with the entrance on Fore Street\, an approximate five\nminute walk from Moorgate Underground and Railway stations. SUMMARY:Mansion House and Dutch Art
DESCRIPTION:David Thompson\, who previously took us on an excellent tour of the Wren Churches\,\nwill give us a brief history of the Mansion House but this is essentially a visit to see\nthe Harold Samuel Collection of Dutch & Flemish 17 th century paintings\, bequeathed\nto the City of London in 1987. The collection of 84 paintings\, including works by\nsuch names as Nicolaes Maes\, Jacob Ochtervelt\, Adrien van Ostade and Jan Steen\,\nis considered one of the finest of the genre in Britain. Perhaps the best known\npicture is by Frans Hals of The Merry Lute Player. This made history when it was\nbought for Lord Samuel at auction in New York in 1963\, partly because of the record\nprice but mostly because it was the first occasion that bidding was conducted by\ntelephone from London. \nMansion House Station is on the District/Circle Line and a 4 minute walk to the\nMansion House. DESCRIPTION:Date:  Thursday 30 May at 12:00 Prompt \nPlaces available:  30\, allocated on a first-come-first-served basis \nPrice per person:  £15 per person\, includes entry to and a guided tour of Compton Verney \nDetail:  FCOA colleagues Peter Gregory Hood and Belinda McMicking have very kindly offered to host a visit to Loxley Hall\, including lunch on the lawn (indoors if wet).  We will then go to Compton Verney\, an award-winning gallery in a Grade 1 listed Georgian mansion (host to the BBC’s Antique Roadshow in July). \nDescription:  Loxley Hall  has been in Peter’s family for 91 years\, partly William and Mary and Victorian\, it is set in a garden of 4 acres with some pretty 18th century outbuildings.  It has modern abstract paintings\, old family portraits\, armour and some good 18th century furniture.   Displayed too is a letter from Admiral Nelson to the then Admiral Lord Hood written at the Mouth of the Nile in 1798.  The nearby Church contains part of an 8th century wall.  Peter will lead us around and tell us much more of the history of the Hall\, and his family connections with it.  He and Belinda will then treat us to lunch. \nCompton Verney:  set in 120 acres of “Capability” Brown designed\, Grade II listed parkland\, it is home to 6 art collections from around the world. SUMMARY:Westminster Abbey Historical/Musical Tour
DESCRIPTION:By kind permission of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster\, the Purcell Club will take us on a tour of the Abbey.  The Purcell Club is named after Henry Purcell\, who was organist of the Abbey from 1679-1695.  It is a male voice choir formed predominantly from members of the Westminster Abbey Old Choristers’ Association.  The singers give their services in order to put on these tours and all the profits go to support the Abbey and a range of small charities. \nWe will assemble at 6.45 pm in the Cloisters for a welcome by a member of the Purcell Club or Abbey clergy before moving into the Abbey to take our seats in the Nave.  The tour starts at 7 pm when the first piece of sacred music is sung.  The speaker will describe the history and architecture of the Abbey in some detail\, moving from one location of interest to the next\, including the Quire\, Sacrarium\, High Altar\, the Cosmati Pavement (unique in this country)\, St Edward the Confessor’s Shrine\, Henry VII Chapel and Poets’ Corner.  At various points there will be a pause for members of the Purcell Club to sing suitable musical items ranging from the 16th to 21st centuries. \nOn returning to the Nave for the final part of the tour\, a short piece will played by one of the Abbey’s organists to demonstrate the magnificent organ.  The tour ends with the choir singing a suitable solemnity\, such as the Kontakion for the Departed\, around the Unknown Warrior’s Grave as the lights dim.  The evening will conclude around 9.15 pm. \nThe Abbey advises that sensible shoes are worn.  Although we may be able to sit at various points on \nApplying online:  Tickets may be purchased online; if you have any difficulty\, please contact the organiser (details below). \nRefunds:  the cost (minus an administration fee) of booking an event will normally be refunded on cancellation of up to one month before the event or up to the moment where we incur expenditure for reservations\, whichever is the earlier. \nClosing date:   10 April 2019 \n

SUMMARY:The Gurkha Museum\, Winchester
DESCRIPTION:(With thanks to FCOA member Valerie Robinson for suggesting this visit; suggestions for other visits are always welcome.) \nThe visit will start at 11.30 am prompt; meet at the museum entrance. \nBritain’s relationship with the Gurkhas can be said to date from the war of 1815 between Britain and Nepal (surprisingly) which led to the first Gurkhas being enlisted.  Since then they have fought on many fronts\, including India’s North-east and North-west frontiers\, both World Wars\, the communist insurrection in Malaysia\, the Falklands\, Afghanistan and many more.  The Museum displays all these campaigns up to the present day. \nIn partnership with the British Museum and the BBC\, The Gurkha Museum has been selected from 100 museums in the UK to participate in “The History of War.”  The “Fisher Kukri\,” a weapon of the Gurkhas\, has been selected for display. \nThe price includes entry to the museum\, tea and coffee on arrival\, a lecture and a light lunch – “Tippin Tappin” (Nepalese nibbles).  The lecture will cover the 200-year history of the special relationship between the Gurkhas and Britain\, and we will see and learn a lot more on the day.  (It may be worth mentioning that the museum rates 4.7 out of 5 on TripAdvisor). \nBy train: Trains run from London Waterloo to Winchester every 5 to 15 minutes in the morning and take about 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes.  It is a 10 -15 minute walk from Winchester station to the Museum. \nBy car: Postcode SO23 8SD for Satnavs.  The Museum is in the central area of Winchester\, not far from the Cathedral.  The M3 and A31 run close by.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s annual lecture will be delivered on Friday 19 October by Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC\, Chancellor of the Australian National University and a former foreign minister of Australia.  The subject of the lecture will be “Global Geopolitics in Transition”.  Tickets will cost £20\, to include a sandwich and a glass of wine.  The lecture will start at 11:00am\, but coffee and tea will be available from 10:00am in the Scott Room. \nProfessor Evans is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on the responsibility to protect (R2P) which holds that if a state fails to protect its citizens from mass atrocities and peaceful measures have failed\, the international community has the responsibility to intervene.  As well as being highly influential and informative\, he is an amusing speaker\, and an example of an earlier talk may be found at http://gevans.org/speeches/Speech652.html \nPlease note that this event is for FCOA members\, including spouses and partners\, only.  No tickets will be issued and admission will be on production of photo ID.
