SUMMARY:The Annual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This year’s annual lecture will be delivered on Friday 19 October by Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC\, Chancellor of the Australian National University and a former foreign minister of Australia.  The subject of the lecture will be “Global Geopolitics in Transition”.  Tickets will cost £20\, to include a sandwich and a glass of wine.  The lecture will start at 11:00am\, but coffee and tea will be available from 10:00am in the Scott Room. \nProfessor Evans is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on the responsibility to protect (R2P) which holds that if a state fails to protect its citizens from mass atrocities and peaceful measures have failed\, the international community has the responsibility to intervene.  As well as being highly influential and informative\, he is an amusing speaker\, and an example of an earlier talk may be found at http://gevans.org/speeches/Speech652.html \nPlease note that this event is for FCOA members\, including spouses and partners\, only.  No tickets will be issued and admission will be on production of photo ID.

SUMMARY:The Gurkha Museum\, Winchester
DESCRIPTION:(With thanks to FCOA member Valerie Robinson for suggesting this visit; suggestions for other visits are always welcome.) \nThe visit will start at 11.30 am prompt; meet at the museum entrance. \nBritain’s relationship with the Gurkhas can be said to date from the war of 1815 between Britain and Nepal (surprisingly) which led to the first Gurkhas being enlisted.  Since then they have fought on many fronts\, including India’s North-east and North-west frontiers\, both World Wars\, the communist insurrection in Malaysia\, the Falklands\, Afghanistan and many more.  The Museum displays all these campaigns up to the present day. \nIn partnership with the British Museum and the BBC\, The Gurkha Museum has been selected from 100 museums in the UK to participate in “The History of War.”  The “Fisher Kukri\,” a weapon of the Gurkhas\, has been selected for display. \nThe price includes entry to the museum\, tea and coffee on arrival\, a lecture and a light lunch – “Tippin Tappin” (Nepalese nibbles).  The lecture will cover the 200-year history of the special relationship between the Gurkhas and Britain\, and we will see and learn a lot more on the day.  (It may be worth mentioning that the museum rates 4.7 out of 5 on TripAdvisor). \nBy train: Trains run from London Waterloo to Winchester every 5 to 15 minutes in the morning and take about 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes.  It is a 10 -15 minute walk from Winchester station to the Museum. \nBy car: Postcode SO23 8SD for Satnavs.  The Museum is in the central area of Winchester\, not far from the Cathedral.  The M3 and A31 run close by.
