SUMMARY:Westminster Abbey Historical/Musical Tour
DESCRIPTION:By kind permission of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster\, the Purcell Club will take us on a tour of the Abbey.  The Purcell Club is named after Henry Purcell\, who was organist of the Abbey from 1679-1695.  It is a male voice choir formed predominantly from members of the Westminster Abbey Old Choristers’ Association.  The singers give their services in order to put on these tours and all the profits go to support the Abbey and a range of small charities. \nWe will assemble at 6.45 pm in the Cloisters for a welcome by a member of the Purcell Club or Abbey clergy before moving into the Abbey to take our seats in the Nave.  The tour starts at 7 pm when the first piece of sacred music is sung.  The speaker will describe the history and architecture of the Abbey in some detail\, moving from one location of interest to the next\, including the Quire\, Sacrarium\, High Altar\, the Cosmati Pavement (unique in this country)\, St Edward the Confessor’s Shrine\, Henry VII Chapel and Poets’ Corner.  At various points there will be a pause for members of the Purcell Club to sing suitable musical items ranging from the 16th to 21st centuries. \nOn returning to the Nave for the final part of the tour\, a short piece will played by one of the Abbey’s organists to demonstrate the magnificent organ.  The tour ends with the choir singing a suitable solemnity\, such as the Kontakion for the Departed\, around the Unknown Warrior’s Grave as the lights dim.  The evening will conclude around 9.15 pm. \nThe Abbey advises that sensible shoes are worn.  Although we may be able to sit at various points on \nApplying online:  Tickets may be purchased online; if you have any difficulty\, please contact the organiser (details below). \nRefunds:  the cost (minus an administration fee) of booking an event will normally be refunded on cancellation of up to one month before the event or up to the moment where we incur expenditure for reservations\, whichever is the earlier. \nClosing date:   10 April 2019 \n

SUMMARY:FCOA Visit to Loxley Hall and Compton Verney
DESCRIPTION:Date:  Thursday 30 May at 12:00 Prompt \nPlaces available:  30\, allocated on a first-come-first-served basis \nPrice per person:  £15 per person\, includes entry to and a guided tour of Compton Verney \nDetail:  FCOA colleagues Peter Gregory Hood and Belinda McMicking have very kindly offered to host a visit to Loxley Hall\, including lunch on the lawn (indoors if wet).  We will then go to Compton Verney\, an award-winning gallery in a Grade 1 listed Georgian mansion (host to the BBC’s Antique Roadshow in July). \nDescription:  Loxley Hall  has been in Peter’s family for 91 years\, partly William and Mary and Victorian\, it is set in a garden of 4 acres with some pretty 18th century outbuildings.  It has modern abstract paintings\, old family portraits\, armour and some good 18th century furniture.   Displayed too is a letter from Admiral Nelson to the then Admiral Lord Hood written at the Mouth of the Nile in 1798.  The nearby Church contains part of an 8th century wall.  Peter will lead us around and tell us much more of the history of the Hall\, and his family connections with it.  He and Belinda will then treat us to lunch. \nCompton Verney:  set in 120 acres of “Capability” Brown designed\, Grade II listed parkland\, it is home to 6 art collections from around the world. It is currently exhibiting “Painting Childhood – from Holbein to Freud” and includes works by Hogarth\, Reynolds and Gainsborough\, among others\, as well as some contemporary British artists.  The origins of the house can be traced back to Saxon times\, it was requisitioned during WWII as an experimental smoke-screen camouflage station.  It fell into disrepair but was saved by Peter Moores in a £45 Million programme\, fully opening to the public in 2004.   ( https://www.comptonverney.org.uk ) \nGetting to Loxley Hall:  By train and taxi:  The nearest station is Warwick Parkway\, about 10 miles from Loxley\, there are half-hourly trains from London Marylebone with a journey time of under 1hr:30.  Taxi phone numbers are: “24/7” taxis – 01789 444 444;  01789 444 222 (www.24x7taxis.co.uk) or “Runabout” (Loxley Taxi Service) 07702 941748.  Book beforehand to meet your train\, and be guided by them as to the journey time\, so as to arrive at Loxley Hall by 12:00. \nNB:   as the visit will involve two venues and then back to a station for those travelling by train\, we will try and link up “car-share” for those who need it\, with those who are able to provide seats. \nBy car:  Loxley (Postcode CV35 9JP) is in Warwickshire\, about 6 miles from Stratford-on-Avon\, a short way off the A429. \nCompton Verney (Postcode CV35 9HZ) also in Warwickshire\, is just a few miles from Loxley\, on the B4086\, near the junction with the B4455. \nRefunds policy: as the FCOA is already committed to expenditure\, we will not be able to offer any refunds. \nClosing date: 21 May.  Contact Tim.Handley@fco.gov.uk  FCOA Room KG 43\, FCO King Charles Street\, London\, SW1A 2AH \n
