DESCRIPTION:Lord Ricketts\, the new President of the Association\, will give this year’s FCOA Annual Lecture on Tuesday 5 November at 12.00 noon in the Diplomatic Academy’s Mayhew Theatre in King Charles Street. The subject will be “What is National Security?” The lecture will be followed by a reception in The Map Room. Tickets can be booked now and cost £20 per head\, to cover the cost of a sandwich lunch with wine\, and security escorting.

DESCRIPTION:Event:          Canterbury Ghost Walk \nLocation:     Outside “ALBERRYS WINE BAR” in St Margarets Street\, Canterbury\, Kent CT1 2TY.   \nDate:            12 November at 18:00 PROMPT \nPrice per person    £12:00 \nDescription: This promises to be a truly fascinating\, if not scary\, experience. Given the age and historical importance of Canterbury\, there’s plenty to draw on\, with murders\, suicides\, skeletons being found walled up and any number of creaking staircases and ghostly alleys. The tour is based on 25 years’ experience of our “Ghosthunter” guide and we’ll hear some of the more general history about Canterbury as well. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions\, there is therefore flexibility as to how long it might take\, but we’ll aim for around 1.5 to 2 hours. \nAmong many other tales\, we may hear about\, if not see:- \n\nthe ghost of the former mayor as he harmlessly rides his bicycle around the city\na phantom girl dressed in grey clothing seen to enter a front door and disappear; a female skeleton was later discovered under the floorboards\, draped in grey cloth\nthe water pump that “ran red with blood”\nnaughty children who can be heard playing on the stairs at “Tiny Tim’s Tearooms”\n\nAfter the tour\, we can regain our courage in a nearby\, recommended pub. SUMMARY:THE GARRICK CLUB VISIT
DESCRIPTION:A visit to the Garrick Club has been arranged for Tuesday 26 November at 10 am.\nTea/coffee and biscuits will be served on arrival in the Morning Room. The Club was\nfounded in 1831 and moved to its present premises in 1864. It houses the largest\nand most significant collection of British theatrical works of art and has over 1000\npaintings\, drawings and pieces of sculpture on display. Artists represented in the\ncollection include Johan Zoffany\, Thomas Lawrence and John Everett Millais\, whilst\npaintings of every British actor of note\, from David Garrick to Michael Gambon\, hang\non the Club walls. Many of the major literary\, theatrical and artistic personalities of\nthe last two centuries have been members\, including Charles Dickens\, William\nMakepeace Thackeray\, Henry Irving\, W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. The tour will\nbe led by Sarah Hughes and she will take in all the main rooms of the Club and point\nout the highlights of the collection. Please note there is a dress code which is called\nformal smart casual! No jeans\, denim\, shorts\, trainers or gym shoes are permitted\nand men should wear a jacket and collared shirt\, ideally also a tie. \nGetting there: the Club is located on Garrick Street in Covent Garden. The nearest\ntube is Leicester Square (Piccadilly/Northern Lines). The Club is the large building\non the right hand side of Garrick Street coming from Leicester Square Station. \nApplying online: 14 places can be booked online. Once these have been\nassigned\, you will no longer be able to book.
