SUMMARY:Tenterden and Bodiam - steam trains\, cream teas AND a castle!
DESCRIPTION:We shall meet at 11:15 prompt at KESR Tenterden train station.  20 places are available and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis to FCOA members and spouses/partners only. If space allows nearer the day\, non-FCOA members may be eligible\, but please check with Tim Handley first. \nThe price includes return steam train to Bodiam (23 miles)\, with ploughman’s lunch outward and cream tea on the return journey. \nThe visit to Bodiam Castle is optional.  Entry is free to National Trust members\, or £9.00 to non-members on production of a steam train ticket. \nWe will see aspects of England at its best and most historical. The first section of the Rother Valley Railway was opened on 2 April 1900\, sadly\, the line was closed to passengers in 1954\, and finally closed in 1961. https://www.kesr.org.uk/your-visit/about-the-kesr/kesr-history \nThe line was popular however\, (part of it runs below sea-level) and a lengthy fightback and restoration programme began. Sections were gradually restored and opened\, and the line reached Bodiam in 2000\, one hundred years after it first opened. Plans are in hand for a further extension. \nWe will visit the Tenterden Town and the Kent and East Sussex Museums. Subject to confirmation\, a guide will explain more about the history of the line as we head to Bodiam. \nAt Bodiam station we will visit the Cavell carriage (used to bring the bodies of Nurse Edith Cavell\, and the Unknown Soldier to Britain). We will then walk the 10 minutes to the beautiful and historic\, moated Bodiam Castle\, originally built in 1385\, https://bodiamcastle.uk/. We will return to Tenterden by steam train\, enjoying a cream tea as we do so and arriving back at about 17:30. \nGetting to the Kent and East Sussex Railway station\, Tenterden \nBy train: from Charing Cross\, if coming from London –Headcorn is the nearest station. \nTaxi: allow 30 minutes by taxi from Headcorn to Tenterden. Book beforehand where possible\, details of some taxi firms available on request. \nBy car (see map below): Tenterden is on the junction of the A28 and the B2080. From the central area of the town\, take the A28 towards Rolvenden\, and shortly afterwards turn on to Station Road.
