SUMMARY:Salters' Hall
DESCRIPTION:Since before the Romans methods of extracting salt had been discovered and the importance of salt\nwas well established. As well as dealing in salt\, Salters were experts in the dry salting of fish and\nmeat and also dealt with flax\, hemp\, logwood\, cochineal\, potashes and chemical preparations. The\nmodern day association of the Salters’ Company with chemistry and science can therefore be traced\nright back to its roots. The Salters’ Company was first licensed by Richard II in 1394 but\, probably\,\nlike the other Livery Companies\, was in existence before 1066. The church of All Hallows in Bread\nStreet served as the central meeting place for business and entertainment as well as for worship. In\n1454 the Company was bequeathed a plot of land and Salters’ Hall was constructed. In 1533 a fire\nbroke out but was successfully extinguished. The Hall was rebuilt after a second fire destroyed it in\n1539 and then yet again rebuilt only to be destroyed by fire in 1598. The original site was then\ndeemed to be too small and a new one was purchased in 1641. This Hall was burnt to the ground in\n1666 by the Great Fire but rebuilt in 1668. By 1810 it was decided that the Hall which had stood for\n142 years was no longer suitable and a new Hall was designed. The Foundation stone of the fifth\nbuilding was laid down and the new Hall completed in 1827. On 10 and 11 May 1941 the Salters’ Hall\nwas bombed by German aircraft and most of the Hall destroyed. The Salters’ Company were then\nwithout a Hall for 43 years until 1976. \nThe present home of the Salters’ Company is a seven-storey\, Grade II-Brutalist building\, refurbished\nin 2016. Our visit will include opportunities to see the Main Hall\, the Court Room\, Salt Lobby and the\nSalters’ Exhibition and Archives. The tour should last about an hour and end with tea and coffee. \nThe Hall is situated on London Wall Place\, with the entrance on Fore Street\, an approximate five\nminute walk from Moorgate Underground and Railway stations. The Hall is also served by buses 11\,\n21\, 23\, 43\, 76\, 100 and 141. \nRefunds: the cost (minus a small administration fee) of booking an event will normally be refunded\non cancellation up to one month before the event or up to the point where we incur expenditure for\nreservations\, whichever is the earlier. \nClosing date: Thursday 23 May \n—————————————————————————————————–
