DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO LACK OF BOOKINGS\, AND WITH REGRET\, THIS VISIT HAS HAD TO BE CANCELLED \nEvent:                    FCOA Visit to the Royal Mint\, Llantrisant\, Wales  \nDate:                     22 August at 13:00 Prompt \nPlaces available:    20: Allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Timed to coincide with school holidays so that members may bring children.  \nPrice per person:   £15 for adults £12 for children. \nDescription: AD 886 is regarded as the start of the Royal Mint. Housed for over 800 years in the Tower of London\, the Mint moved to Wales in the 1970s. It now exports to around 60 countries. It has made coins and medals\, including the Military Cross and the George Cross\, (but not the VC) and the 2012 London Olympic medals\, and we will see some of the most rare historical items in the world. \nOur tour will take us to areas inaccessible to the general public; with plenty to keep children occupied. We will learn how coins are made\, and for a small charge\, make a coin. (The only place in Britain where this is possible). We will then be free to wander around the Mint. \nMake a short break of your visit? \nIf there is sufficient demand\, we will arrange an evening meet-up of members on the tour\, and those in the region. \nThere is a lot to see nearby:- a vineyard\, distillery\, museums – including mining\, the BBC centre\, Cardiff Castle\, Cathedral\, or Roman ruins. (No scheduled performance at the Welsh National Opera). If members would like to stay overnight. Tim Handley has details of hotels which the Royal Mint has recommended\, and which might offer preferential rates. \nGetting there: By train: half-hourly from Paddington to Cardiff. The nearest station is Pontyclun\, about 13 miles from Cardiff. (Check train times). \nBy car: Postcode CF72 8YT\, four miles from Junction 34 of the M4\, take the exit marked Llantrisant.
