DESCRIPTION:A visit to the Apothecaries’ Hall for 24 people has been arranged for Wednesday 16\nOctober at 11 am. The tour will last 1½ hours. The Society of Apothecaries’\narchives chart the history of its development and its changing roles and activities as\na City Livery Company; a major centre for the manufacture and sale of drugs at the\nHall (1671-1922); the founder (in 1730) and manager (until 1899) of Chelsea Physic\nGarden\, and medical examining and licensing body (1815 to the present day). The\nWorshipful Society of Apothecaries lies at the heart of the early foundations of\nmodern-day medicine and remains an important\, active and innovative medical\ninstitution today. The Society plays a key role in the advancement of special areas\nof medicine and in the ongoing post-graduate education and qualification of\npractitioners. Steeped in history and tradition\, the Society was founded by Royal\nCharter in 1617 and is one of the few livery companies in the City of London to\nremain professionally based with over 85 per cent of its membership belonging to\nprofessions allied to medicine. Both Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (first woman in\nBritain to qualify as a physician and surgeon) and Agatha Christie were members. \nGetting there: Blackfriars Station (District and Circle Lines) is about a 4 minute walk\naway. Other stations are St Paul’s (Central Line) and City Thameslink. Buses 4\, 11\,\n15\, 23\, 26\, 45\, 63\, 76 and 172 all go near. \nApplying online: 12 places can be booked online. Once these have been\nassigned\, you will no longer be able to book.
