DESCRIPTION:FCDOA is organising online talk by\nJohn Campbell\non\nRichard Burdon\, Viscount Haldane: \nResurrecting a Forgotten Statesman\non 13 October 2021 @ 11.00-12.00 on Zoom \nTicket is £5 \n\nHaldane’s biographer\, John Campbell\, will give us an insight  into this remarkable lawyer\, statesman and thinker who shaped many aspects of modern Britain. Born in 1856  in Edinburgh\, he attended the universities of Edinburgh and Göttingen. Moving to London at the age of 21 to become a barrister his  rise was phenomenal; an  MP by the age of 29\, the youngest QC appointed for a generation at the age of 33\, he was soon established not only as the pre-eminent legal mind of his generation\, but also as the brains of the Liberal party contributing ideas to address the social\, political and economic changes of his time. As Secretary of State for War in Campbell Bannerman and Asquith’s administrations\, he was the architect of Britain’s success in WW1 in resisting Germany’s hegemony\,and his influence stands behind the creation of MI5 and MI6\, He was also deeply instrumental in the reform of British higher education\, and the development of  several universities\, including LSE and Imperial College. He was Lord Chancellor from 1912-15 under Asquith and in 1925 served in that role in Ramsay Macdonald’s first Labour administration. \n  \nJohn Campbell
